Marco Polo is describing a bridge, stone by stone.

- But which is the stone which supports the bridge? - Kublai Kan asks.

- The bridge isn’t supported by this or that stone, - Marco Polo replies, - but by the line of the arch they form. -

Kublai Kan keeps silent, thinking. Then he adds: - Why are you talking about stones? Only the arch matters to me. -

Polo replies: - Without the stones there’s no arch. -
